Over time, it will become evident that through this blog, one brand will frequently be under our radar for obvious reasons, and that is SEIKO. The Japanese brand needs no special introduction, nor do we need to claim any groundbreaking discovery with the Presage Cocktail Time series.
Some have said it’s the best value-for-money option from SEIKO in this price range, while others believe that for this money, the company should have included sapphire crystal instead of their favored Hardlex. Both opinions are somewhat accurate, but let’s delve into the Presage models and explain why every collector should have one in their collection.
First of all, the unique and imaginative name Presage was first used by the company in the 1960s and was revived around 2010, initially in Japan and later worldwide. The series offers a wide range of color options, in stainless steel or leather straps, with diameters ranging from 38.5 mm to 40.5 mm, open-heart designs, limited editions, and so on, but they all follow the same line. I believe the phrase that describes them more than any other is ‘refined and understated elegance’.
There’s a compelling reason why these watches have garnered so much attention, and why models like the SRPE19J1 and SRPB41J1 are already considered legendary. Although their dials aren’t crafted to Grand Seiko standards, they give the impression of belonging to a much higher category, making them unbeatable in the sub-thousand-euro market. The way they reflect light, their refined hands, everything works beautifully. Even the stainless steel bracelets, which we love to criticize SEIKO for, are quite satisfactory considering the price point. Undoubtedly, they are fantastic choices for both everyday use and special occasions. If you wish to turn heads with your selection, the overwhelming majority of the Cocktail Time series will more than accomplish that.

We must also acknowledge that SEIKO hit the jackpot with the women’s series, with the CSRE014J1 and SRE009J1 being by far the most impressive models. So much so, that I’ve envied the fact there aren’t identical men's versions... Don’t judge me, it’s the truth!

Now, let’s address the elephant in the room: the Hardlex crystal. Many of you might say, “How can we talk about daily dress watches, when they don’t even have sapphire crystal?” and you’d have a point. Just one though… The truth is, your Hardlex will get scratched sooner or later, and I don’t intend to use the argument that “every scratch tells a story.” However, I will remind you that the curvature of the Hardlex and the effect it gives to the dial from every viewing angle is such that, if faithfully replicated in sapphire, this series would easily fall into the four-figure price category, even if all other features remained unchanged.
In conclusion, and just before I share my top picks with you, I want to emphasize three things. First, I have deliberately left out discussions about the Presage Shard Edge and Classic models for a separate conversation in the future, as they are more expensive and fulfill different criteria in our requirements. Second, these watches are often found on sale at various local stores, making them the epitome of value for money. And third... finesse, class, timelessness, and exceptional pricing, all in one package.

I am The Consultant, and we'll talk again soon.
I don't think anyone can deny that Presage models are vfm. Seiko has done amazing job with them but I think lately they have run out of ideas
ReplyDeleteI am so fascinated with Presage models and completely agree with your article, but I didn't know about the women's models! I now have the CSRE014J1 model to my buying radar! Thanks!
